In 2007, the Beauharnois-Salaberry RCM had a population of 61,416 people, representing 4.4% of the Montérégie’s population and 0.8 % of Quebec’s population.
 
Of this population:

  • 75.6% is made up of workers aged 25 to 64 (2005);
  • 29% speak both French and English at work;
  • 24.6% hold a high school diploma at minimum.

The region’s strategic positioning has attracted many leading employers to the region, including Rio Tinto Alcan, Éka Chimie, Rotek Plastic and Diageo.

Fertile ground for the agri-food industry

As close to 78% of Beauharnois-Salaberry’s territory is located on permanent agricultural areas, the region is very conducive to developing and growing agri-food businesses. For example, two multinationals, the Bonduelle Canada and Dare Foods Limited, are based in the Sainte-Martine region.

Kernel corn and soy farming have grown considerably in recent years, and efforts have also been undertaken to create and support organized biodiesel and ethanol projects.

Recognized for its many bodies of water and marinas, including the second largest marina in Quebec, the region offers a wealth of varied tourist attractions.
